FAQ – High-Power System Design
When should I use the 4 kHz vs. 16 kHz switching frequency?
Use 4 kHz for highest efficiency and cooler drive operation with standard motors. Use 16 kHz for quieter motor operation (reduced whine) and when controlling motors with special laminations designed for higher frequencies.
What is the main advantage of field-oriented control (FOC)?
FOC provides independent control of motor torque and flux, like a DC motor. This results in full torque at zero speed, excellent dynamic response, and higher efficiency across the speed range.
Is an external braking resistor required?
Absolutely. An 18.5kW drive requires a substantial external braking resistor bank to dissipate braking energy. The internal DC bus capacitor alone cannot handle it.
Can I use this drive without an encoder?
Yes, using KEB's Sensorless Motor Management (SMM). It provides good speed control but may not match the very low speed or high dynamic performance of an encoder-based system. Choose based on your application's needs.
What size of power cables and protection are needed for 42A input?
You need heavy-gauge cables (e.g., 10 AWG or larger per local code), a three-phase circuit breaker and contactor rated for at least 50-60A, and likely a line reactor to protect against power line disturbances.
